Why We Like The Ripley AF SLX Mountain Bike
Marketed first as an aggressive cross-country bike then a fun-loving trail bike the Ibis Ripley AF SLX Mountain Bike knows no boundaries and no trails it can’t tame. We ride the 120mm Ripley bike through dense hand-cut singletrack and open desert mesas with supreme confidence and a fun factor through the roof. The aluminum frame gets all the bells and whistles of the carbon version without the large price tag to go with it. Ibis employs the near-legendary DW-link suspension to the rear end, allowing for premium pedaling performance and a near bottomless feel on the descents. The Ripley AF is an aggressive dream bike for those of us who aren’t afraid to take it to the park one day and the XC trails the next.
Made with fun in focus the Ibis Ripley receives a variety of numbers to healthily bring this versatile bike to the front of the pack, up or down. With a 65.5-degree head-angle paired with a short 44mm offset the bike is tailored for chunky terrain with lots of technical features. Ibis also makes sure the bike can handle high-speed descents with ease, as that slack head-angle and long-wheelbase keeps us in control and confident while we’re ripping down terrain. The SLX build comes stock with a long dropper to get the saddle quickly out of the way on descents and back up when we need to pedal hard to get through rough or steep terrain.
A slew of parts make for premium pedaling and suspension performance that fit well in the Ripley AF’s game plan. The smoothest shifting we’ve ever encountered hits with the Shimano SLX drivetrain powered by Hyperglide II technology. SLX keeps the weight down while providing premium pedaling performance. Suspension performance is made up of Fox components front and rear and hold up to hit after hit of rock abuse. The Fox Performance line gets much of the same features as the Factory build issue pieces, but without the aggressive price tag. Wheels and cockpit are provided by Ibis as the hoops feature a huge 35mm internal width paired up with aggressive Maxxis rubber.
We’ll be taking our Ibis Ripley AF up mountains far and wide enjoying the premium pedaling characteristics brought by DW-link and Shimano shifting. Going down the mountain is no different, as the DW-linkage works with Fox suspension to bring us a premium performance on the descents. Making way for trail ripping dreams this budget-friendly but feature-packed bike is a sure way to happily get on the trails and get rolling year after year. Whether it’s our first time or the 100th time, every loop is fun and adventurous on the Ibis Ripley AF.
